Participate

To successfully complete our project, we need to collect data on the breeding success of loons on as many lakes as possible, covering a wide range of environmental conditions and levels of human activity. Whether your lake is quiet or heavily visited, your participation is essential!

Interested in this adventure? You must:

have access to a lake in the Laurentians between June and September

attend a virtual meeting at the start of the season

Please make at least one observation per month of the number of adult and juvenile loons on your lake—or on a section of it for larger lakes1—between June and September. A boat and spotting binoculars are helpful for making more accurate observations.

1. In the case of large lakes, we understand that it is not always easy to monitor the entire body of water. Therefore, you may choose to monitor only a specific section of the lake (a bay, a particular area, or any other section you visit regularly)..

be able to make at least two observations per month of the activity (human presence) on your lake from the shore.

fill out the required forms online and send them to us

On this form, you will need to choose whether you want to monitor the entire lake or a specific section of it. You will then receive an email with the protocols and links to the data collection forms. Finally, you will be sent an invitation to a virtual meeting.

Be sure to describe your section in sufficient detail on the registration form so that we can locate it on a map;

Be sure to make all your summer observations within this specific section.

If possible, you can also team up with other observers to divide up sections of the lake and record your observations on a single form, which would allow us to monitor the entire lake.
